Police Inspector Bobby Owen and his lovely friend Olive are cruising the British countryside looking for some especially tasty chocolate when they meet up with odd hermits, crusty landowners, suspicious barkeeps, and find themselves embroiled in murder, blackmail and a couple of El Greco paintings that are worth millions. It's a terrific ride and you're invited along.

It all starts when Bobby Owen's wife Olive tries to get hold of the recipe for some heavenly handmade chocolates. The chocolate maker is a young woman who lives deep in the forest. But the secret ingredient comes from an eccentric hermit. Opportunistic businessmen are also after the recipe. Might be money in it! Trouble ensues.

But this is just one of the bizarre occurrences that perplex Bobby Owens, as he concentrates on finding the missing merchant who used to sell the chocolates at his shop. The hermit goes missing too, to compound matters. And then suddenly a fellow turns up in the neighborhood hunting for artwork that disappeared from Barnsley Abbey decades ago. The El Greco paintings and the Cellini candelabra are worth a fortune to whoever can find them. But why the resurgence of interest in them?

The sheer multiplicity of odd circumstances and colorful characters make this an engaging mystery. Bobby suspects that everything ties together, and so do we. But how? Meanwhile Bobby's interviews with suspects and others are entertaining. He uses his wry humor to deflect arrogance and rudeness. His unhurried, amiable style of questioning gets people to say more than they intend. Bobby is well educated too, and his job often amuses him. He's prone to joke about his "suspicious policeman's mind" and "low police cunning."

Wartime blackouts can make chasing suspects at night challenging. This book was first published in 1942, and the wartime atmosphere is a subtle presence in this book.

Being a chocolate addict, I was captivated from the first page by the chocolates theme. I also found intriguing the theme of alternative medicine (the hermit is an herbalist healer). Overall, this is a delicious mystery, enriched by colorful characters and topped off with an exciting fight scene at the end.

Inspector Bobby Owen of the Wychshire County Police, on a rare Sunday off, agrees to help solve a little mystery for his wife Olive. A tea shop near Wychford is selling delicious chocolates with an unusual flavor. They are, Olive believes, made by a young woman in a lonely woodland cottage near the village of Barsley Forest, and Olive hopes to persuade her to make a batch to sell at the church bazaar. Bobby knows something about the candy maker she lives with her mother and a stepfather with a criminal past and a reputation for violence. Bobby has changed the beat of one of his policemen to keep an eye on the cottage in case the stepfather might be up to something. In the back of his mind Bobby is wondering if the secret recipe might be valuable enough to help this unfortunate young woman escape what must be an unpleasant situation.

At Barsley Forest, Bobby and Olive ask Sergeant Turner to suggest a route for a woodland ramble. Turner recommends a path across the park of Barsley Abbey. The two policemen go on to discuss the valuable Barsley Abbey art collection, which attracts art lovers whenever the house is open to the public. The Rawdons, in need of cash, would like to sell all or part, but an entail prevents it. Fifty years ago two El Greco paintings and the Cellini candelabra were stolen or lost. and it's thought they might still be somewhere in the vicinity. Sergeant Turner is dubious he has seen photographs of the El Grecos. Surely the local people would have nothing so ugly hanging on their walls. The Owens avoid the park for a less traveled path through the forest.

The chocolate maker, Mary Flynn, turns out to be a fragile-looking but formidable young woman, the bread-winner for her invalid mother and feral little sister. The stepfather mistreats them all, and Mary has recently locked him in the cellar for a week with only raw potatoes to eat, to teach him a lesson. Bobby is impressed. She can't make the chocolates now because a strange man came to the cottage and stole her last bottle of the special flavoring, made for her from forest plants by herbalist Peter the Hermit. Now Peter is missing and his hovel has been ransacked. Bobby sees what may be a blood stain on the dirt floor. The next day Bobby learns that the tea shop owner who sold Mary's chocolates has also been reported missing. Bobby's Sunday outing has turned into a missing persons case. Since his Chief is involved in war work, he assigns it to himself.

This is the most "Midsomer Murder"-ish Golden Age mystery I've read. Olive's quest for special chocolates for the bazaar is exactly the kind of expedition Joyce Barnaby would have undertaken. The forbidding forest, hermit herbalist, missing masterpieces, strange precocious child, and family secrets are all classic MM plot elements. A perfect mix of intelligence and whimsy.
This series and author. Great detective character
Bobby is on the case again. His dogged determination and singular focus ensures he always gets his man.
Hard to put down - such interesting characters and so very real they seemed to jump right off the page! Could this be my favorite?
I usually enjoy classic mystery, and I found this novel to be no exception; in fact, I enjoyed it better than most. I enjoy the slow teasing of clues as the protagonist interviews suspects, rather than a reliance on forensics and DNA. I had never previously read anything by ER Punshon , and I found his method of sprinkling a plethora of suspects and motives to be fascinating.. Although there were a few bits of WWII-era British slang that I had to puzzle out from context, the writing was excellent. If you enjoy classic mystery, this book is sure to please you.
