In the wake of several near-cataclysmic events, humanity created the Cure, a DNA-altering antidote to death by disease and old age. But all cures come with side effects a small percentage of the population develops a wide range of powers, some of which are lethal to others, and some which are lethal to the wielder.

These people are called the Estranged, hunted and shunned, safe only on the Island of Exile. It is here that Kaeva and Eddie meet—and where they set a prophecy in motion, quite possibly sealing their own demise, and even the end of Exile.

Breaker Exile Book 1 edition by AF Henley Kelly Wyre Romance eBooks

I really enjoyed this novel set in a dystopian world where powers are manifested by a small percentage of the population due the "Cure". Not everyone's powers are beneficial and it explores in detail the rights of individuals to choose suicide over living with the consequences of their new powers. If reading about suicide is a trigger for anyone, I would avoid this book as this theme is prevalent throughout the whole novel.

4.0 of 5 stars –
Both of these authors are new to me, and it turned out to be double the fun. I was pleasantly surprised and “electrified” by the story. Sorry for the pun, but apropos, as one MC (Kaeva) was an “estranged” who could short circuit whole cities (thus the title, which was also symbolic). I like dystopian and paranormal, with a nice dose of gay romance without it overwhelming the story, and this one had just the right balance, making it a joy to read.

Kelly Wyre & A.F. Henley’s writing was descriptive, easy-to-read, well-paced and action-packed. One nice part of their world building was the different kinds of estrangements, and how they mixed and created a society on the Isle of Exile. This set up some good action scenes and nice moments, like [***SPOILER ALERT*** in the beginning how Eddie was saved from killing himself, Eddie’s swimming into nothing and struggling to find the island, and Eddie at Kaeva’s house for the first time with Kaeva being Eddie’s unwilling sponsor (a wonderful back and forth) ***END SPOILER***]. The sex scenes were all from the perception of a receiver, so to speak, and not fully like a guy might think and feel; but they were still good enough to cap off the slow build and capture the moment. The story was engaging throughout, even if predictable in spots, and ended with a nice exciting climax.

The story was effectively told in third person from the pov’s of Kaeva and Eddie, with a well-developed cast of secondaries as well. I appreciated the diversity that was present, including Kaeva’s being black and bisexual. I grew to like and care for both MCs. The tension between them, moving from reluctant tolerance to lovers, was quite the journey. I enjoyed how the tension was magnified by the physical one created by Kaeva’s not being able to touch without possibly electrocuting the person.

The opposites-attract worked well, as did the age gap. Kaeva (36) was a gruff, quiet loner, yet caring and interesting. Eddie (25) was talkative, spontaneous, and persistent, but seemed to be a bit too immature for his age. Sadly, he had suicidal thoughts, driven by his “gift” of picking up people’s evil thoughts. But this also presented a major disconnect for me, in that he didn’t think or act like someone thinking about killing himself, such as in his bubbly optimism. In a way good for the reader, his constant diarhea of the mouth was indeed irritating (cleverly bringing me to feel the same as Kaeva). Fortunately, his snide sarcastic remarks were a perfect counter to Kaeva’s soberness and roughness.

All in all, an exciting pairing of MCs as well as authors, full of elements that made this a good start to carry forward into the series.

BELIEVE IT. FIND IT. PROVE YOUR WORTH.

Breaker – Exile, Volume I, by the dynamic duo A.F. Henley & Kelly Wyre, is intense, mind-boggling, and otherworldly and it took a little bit of time for me to get the concept wrapped inside my brain of everything that was taking place. It moves with a fast-paced—cutting edge that keeps you on a suspended level of “OMG” and “WTH” - sometimes with both eyes open—sometimes only one.

"EVERYBODY MEETS THE DARK ALONE"

Eddie and Kaeva—both Estranged—separated by two completely different worlds—both dream, have a destiny—now their two worlds have collided and they must decide how they proceed from there.

Eddie is young and has spent his entire life under the negative thumb of a mother whom—by Eddie’s account—was ashamed of her son and wanted to hide his estrangement—and made him feel guilty for having it. This left a lasting effect on his psyche—causing low self-worth and ultimately will be the thing that he will work the hardest to reverse. Aside from this, however—which is quite remarkable considering—is quite the jokester, a real flirt, rather charming, has absolutely no filter, and he loves - LOVES - to get inside Kaeva’s space.

Now, Kaeva, is quite the opposite from our Eddie. He is gruff, bitter, shrewd, angry, A N G R Y. Did I mention he was gruff? Oh yes. . .well, he despises people in general—REALLY. Wants his space—free of anyone. Likes the quiet and likes being alone. He has his reasons and they are valid. He’s had a really hard life and his estrangement has forced him to seek the space and loneliness he now thrives. He’s furious when he is assigned to take on the newcomer, Eddie.
------------------------------------------
“Is your wife out?”
Kaeva set the candle down with a frown. “You really don’t get it, do you? There is no wife. There are no children. There are usually no house guests. What part of I can’t touch people are you missing?”
Eddie pulled his hands free and flailed them in the air. “I don’t f***ing know! It’s just. . .I mean. . .” He gestured around the room. “I assumed, I guess. This isn’t exactly what I imagined. It’s kind of pretty. You know?”
Surprisingly enough, Kaeva almost cracked a smile. “And just what, exactly, did you expect?”
“Wolves,” Eddie said without hesitation.
-------------------------------------------------

These two are like oil and water, hot and cold, sweet and sour, but Eddie has a lot of questions and he won’t be deterred by Kaeva’s rough manner or aggressive behavior. He’s persistent, not easily intimidated—quite the contrary—and he makes it known, early on, that if Kaeva’s interested he is more than willing to offer any sexual favors during his stay.

He’s fascinated by Kaeva, eager to learn and understand, but underneath his façade he is nervous and he has an ulterior motive that brought him to Exile—now he must decide if he wants to carry it out. Fate has spoken—brought these two men together—but visions leave more questions than answers and with time running out, will either man realize their destiny is right in front of them?

Breaker is a compelling read I found to be exhilarating in content with a descriptive narrative that kept me completely engrossed inside this fascinating world the authors created. It is made up of a whole host of secondary characters—each with their own estrangement—unique and challenging—working together to make Exile work for each citizen living there.

At the core—are Eddie and his reasons for coming to Exile—away from that he finds a gratifying and powerful connection to Kaeva—one that allows them to explore each other in a way that has never happened in Kaeva’s lifetime and it is breathtakingly beautiful. Kaeva finds himself feeling something he never thought he would have again—HOPE—as his resolve weakens for the younger man.

I still find myself with some confusion, some questions, things left unsolved, and I am going to assume that some of these things will continue to unravel as the series plays out. I am anxious to see Kaeva and Eddie—in light of the new arrangement—find their balance. Eddie can be very infuriating—for Kaeva’s mental stability—and I can’t imagine that changing. . .much. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to others who love these plot devices.
I loved this book. I started off thinking that I'd read a few chapters before I went to bed, but I couldn't stop! The next thing I knew, it was morning. The beginning of this book really pulls you in with intrigue. I loved all the characters, but especially the two main ones, Kaeva and Eddie. Their relationship had a great balance between serious and funny that kept you wanting to read more. I can't wait to see what they do with the world in the next book!
I really enjoyed this novel set in a dystopian world where powers are manifested by a small percentage of the population due the "Cure". Not everyone's powers are beneficial and it explores in detail the rights of individuals to choose suicide over living with the consequences of their new powers.
